Invisalign RetainersSan Jose, CA

A dental appliance used to hold teeth in their correct position especially following orthodontic treatment. A retainer keeps your teeth from moving after they’ve been straightened with braces. It can take at least four to six months for the new position of your teeth to become permanent. During that time, your teeth will try to shift back to their original position, which is called relapse.

Do you have to wear your retainer forever after braces?

Adults should wear their removable retainer or retainers every night, whether three of 30+ years after orthodontic treatment, unless specifically told otherwise by their orthodontist.

But can wearing an old retainer to straighten teeth work?

As it turns out, it can. Retainers aren’t just there to keep your teeth in place, after all. Because they’re custom made, they can also help improve any minor oral problems you might find years after you had your braces removed.

Some people need to wear a retainer all day, every day for 4 months, while others will be instructed to wear theirs for 12 months. Almost all orthodontists instruct that you use some form of retainer each night, indefinitely, after your braces have been removed. 5-20 days are ok to go without a retainer. If you are using a removable retainer, you can switch to a fixed one. There is no hassle in a fixed retainer like there is in the removable ones.
