Sleep Apnea and Snoring
Snoring is not only annoying but it can also be an indication of a larger, more ominous health issue, OSA (obstructive sleep apnea). OSA is occurs when there is a physical blockage of the airway. Common symptoms include excessive sleepiness, sore throats, high blood pressure and headaches.
The good news is snoring and OSA are very treatable! There are a number of options from the more conservative, such as a custom-made mouthpiece that opens the airway called an OAT (Oral Appliance Therapy) to a more permanent solution such as jaw surgery (maxillomandibular advancement). Jaw surgery, which opens the airway where obstructions are encountered, is the most effective treatment for those who have severe OSA and who have failed other therapy approaches.
Each person’s situation is unique, it’s important to get a comprehensive assessment and treat the root cause, not the symptom.
