 Oil Pulling:  Not for Everyone
Oil Pulling:  Not for Everyone

Oil Pulling has been in the news for the last few years as a natural way to prevent tooth decay.  We are all for natural and we are all for preventing tooth decay but we were a little unsure about Oil Pulling.  We were going to perform our own experiment and see how Oil Pulling worked to give you a first-hand experience but we couldn’t get any takers, so we did the next best thing and took the web to find out more.

WebMD provides a very simple explanation for Oil Pulling:

“This technique is popular in Ayurvedic medicine. You swish a tablespoon of oil (such as sesame, coconut, or olive oil) around in your mouth for up to 20 minutes to “pull out” bacteria. A recent study found that using coconut oil could prevent tooth decay, but there’s no science to support it leaving a sparkle.”

The WebMd commentary was more than what we needed to make up our minds.   We decided on the following conclusion:

You know what does work for preventing tooth decay?  Brushing your teeth, flossing and rinsing at least twice a day.  Minimizing the amount of sugary and acidic foods you consume.  Swishing with water during meals and snacks to help keep your teeth clean.  Visiting your dentist twice a year for a comprehensive exam and PROFESSIONAL cleaning.

If you truly want to know how to prevent tooth decay speak with your dentist or hygienist.  They can help you put together a dental care program that works for your lifestyle.  I don’t know about you, but talking to my dentist is so much more preferable over swishing with a tablespoon of oil for 20 minutes!
